LG Scoop Mobile Phone under DRM!

I recently purchased an LG “Scoop” Mobile Phone from ALLTEL with the two year contract. I don’t plan on not having a cell phone so no problem right? Turns out I was wrong! 40 days into my contract and I find out they have killed the ability to upload ringtones yourself! - Mind you there was mention of this fact in the brochures or literature! ALL RINGTONES MUST BE PURCHASED THROUGH ALLTEL!

I contacted LG Customer support and asked:

I have This month purchased an LG AX260GRY “Scoop” Mobile Phone. I have created a few sound files to use as ringers (My daughter and son singing). The phone is unable to identify the mp3 as a ringer file. I have read the manual several times and cannot find the format to use for ringers. What is the process for loading ringtones? Thank you in advance for your time and assistance ~Dan Snider

Their response? try this on for size!

Dear Dan, Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Unfortunately, the telephone does not have this feature. A sound file cannot be created into a ringer. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics. Maya C E-mail Administrator Customer Interactive Center LGEAI

IMHO, There is no reason to REMOVE THIS FEATURE save for one! DRM!

So, the ringer that I want (My Kids singing) - WHICH IS NOT OWNED BY THE RIAA - Is yet another casualty in the war on consumers by the RIAA

Well I have been a loyal customer of LG for the last four phones, but this is MY LAST ONE!

LG, I hope you come to your senses and issue a firmware upgrade to correct this FOOLISH policy change, if not, you certainly deserve the upcoming downward slide in market share!

***********UPDATE***********

I just received a reply to an angry demand for explanation, here it is!

Dear Dan,

We do apologize that your are displeased with this feature. Unfortunately, although we are the manufacturer of this phone, we do not choose the features and or software the phone is equipped with. The service provider makes those decisions and LG issues the phone per there specifications.

Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics.

So which is it?  Did ALLTEL DRM the phone or did LG do it?  When they answer the question directly, I will post it here.

  1. hey dan i saw your review on phone scoop, its definately alltel’s doing because in recent Moto Phone updates (RAZR 2, ROKR) the mp3 ringtones were disabled also.

However for the scoop theres currently a way to work around and get your ringtones to work: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1327553

    hopefully that helps.

  2. Hello.

Im currently very upset with the way my new phone is. I just bought the new Lg TuT720. Looks great. But works AWFUL.
I can’t not make my own ringtones,!!!! I tried many things and now Im just physically drained. !! I want to be able to make my own and not have to worry about payin 3.99 for 16sec of sound that half of the time its not even cut where I want it. Has anyone found a way to make your ringtone that can place the DRM code in it????.. HELP!! PLEASE..

  3. I have not tried it yet, but check out the GREAT people at Howard Forums (link in pervious post comment), they have a HUGE amount of information on just about EVERY Cell Phone out there!

  4. It worked. I downloaded BitPim. It worked perfectly. I’m not very great with computer software, still learning a lot. This program is very user friendly and actually real easy to use.
Was able to get into my Cell (LG-TU770) files and was able to add Ringtones AND text Messages Ringers as well. Although when You do Ringers U have to over-rite them. Cannot delete them. I was just happy I was able to put ringer tones In general on it. Thanks greatly!! :D.

  5. when i say Ringers I met text tones. Not ringtones it self. The Ring Tones you can delete and do what you want with them. Was also able to make sure I was able to set them as a Ringtone , which is great because sometimes the file was too big and my phone was unable to read them.

  6. Alright. So, pretty straight forward. This is exactly what I did and it worked.

1.Go into Settings Menu(9) on the cell phone
    2.Select Connection(7)
3.Select USB Connection(2) and make sure its on Mass Storage(2)
    4.Downlaod BitPim 1.0.4 or greater.

After pluging in your cellphone to the computer, the screen on the cellphone should say some shenanigans about it being connected as a mass storage device. Go ahead and click the cancle button. The screen should show a check mark to show that its “supposibly disconnected”.

    5.Open BitPim
6.Click on “edit” at the top
    7.Then select “Settings”
8.Change the phone type to LG-VX8700 and lick ok
9.Click on “view” at the top of BitPim and select “View filesystem”
10.You should now be able to select “Filesystem” from the left hand menu
11.Select “Filesystem” and you should now see a folder with a “/” next to it. Click on this folder.
12.It will say “retreiving…” for a minute or two.
    13. expand the folders in this order;
    LGAPP/Media/Midis/Ringtone
14.”Right” click on the ringtone folder and select “New File…”
    15. A window will pop up and all you have to do is load any mp3 you want.

  7. Awesome! I’m glad it worked!
I can’t wait to try it for myself!

  8. Just curious if you have tried using BitPim with your Scoop.

I just got a UX260, which is the Scoop but for US Cellular, and USCC has carrier restrictions which prevent using custom MP3s as ringtones as well.

Wanted to see if you made any headway in the battle from which I might benefit!

    Thanks! :)

Give Howard forums a try, I am pretty certain that bitpim will work for you too!

  10. I had the US Cellular UX260 (their scoop) and was able to download ringtones from myxertones.com but I couldn’t get the ringtones to work on my husbands Scoop (he has Alltel). I exchanged mine within 30 days and got the UX565, so much better. I can download ringtones on it.

  11. OKAY WELL IM ONE OF THOSE NOT SO HIGH TECH PEOPLE AND I NEED HELP PLEASE ~! I HAVE A SCOOP AS WELL FROM ALLTEL AND I HEARD THAT IF YOU BUT IT IN THE BITMIP FORM IT WILL TRANSFER IT OVER AND IT IS SIMPLE BUT IM TOTALLY NOT COMPUTER SAVVY , I MEAN ALL I NO HOW TO DO IS TEXT AND CALL LOL BUT WHEN I GO TO SEARCH FOR THE PHONE I CANT FIND IT ON THE OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME !!!!

  12. I have the same phone, and I was pretty ticked about this as well. HOWEVER, to get recorded audio as a ringtone can be done. What I have to do is send the audio to another phone (my cousin on the same plan, for example), who then sends it back. for some reason, received files can be used. But not directly. You have to add them onto the ringtone shuffle list. That is the best I can do; I still don’t know how to individually assign audio. If that helps though, there you have it.

  13. okay so you can have someone bluetooth songs to you and then send them to yourself and save them and then put them on shuffle list and there ya go.. your free ringtones will work.. this works with the glimmer also!

  14. I found this same problem with the LG scoop, very pissed off as i am i go on the hunt on how to find a way. There ARE ways, 2 ways i know of. 1 is to find the file extension used to create the LG scoop ring tones and use a MP3 Converter and convert the file type. Or try going to Phonezoo.com and it sends ring tones to your phone for free, that’s what i did.
